Dear Friends,
No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Today’s Gospel reading begins with the story of the dishonest steward. It tells how a man intentionally mishandles his master’s goods in order to receive a personal gain. Jesus does not condone the man’s dishonesty, but He does praise his shrewdness in using the things of this world to secure his future. We are also advised to secure our future, not only in this life, but more importantly for eternal life.
We are given a choice to be “sons of this world” or to be “sons of light”. The steward in today’s Gospel was a son of this world. He knew how to use the goods of this world to his own benefit. We also are stewards of God’s gifts to us. As stewards, we are given charge of the good gifts that we have received from God. And we have the responsibility to use those gifts wisely for the accomplishment of good in this world and for the world to come.
May the Lord guide us in the use of the good gifts He has given us so that we, being faithful in a little, may also become worthy to be entrusted with true riches.
